  The pan-tiao pattern refers to ornamental designs composed of ribbon-like, interlacing lines that continue seamlessly, often appearing in geometric forms. Their unbroken flow and ever-changing variations are considered auspicious symbols.

 In Song-dynasty brocade, pan-tiao patterns frequently incorporate motifs such as plum blossoms, peonies, chrysanthemums, and precious floral emblems (baoxianghua) within the flowing ribbons. At the points where the bands overlap, additional geometric motifs—such as tortoise-shell grids, interlocking “lock” patterns, or paired rectangular forms—are often introduced. For this reason, the design is also known as the “Pan-tiao Floral Pattern.
